Round Miracle

Waiting for a round miracle

The copper air ringing. Rusty foliage on the ground. Glassed-over puddles crack under winter boots.

A herd of bronze clouds wanders aimlessly through the scorched sky steppe. The horn-crowned snails crawl their way down South.

Ignat looks longingly into the distance. He’s waiting for a something. This something must be round. Ignat is waiting for a miracle. A big soft round miracle.

Around are square peasant huts, square windows, square gardens.

It’s growing dark. His wife Nurka, his square woman, sits at the square table. She scratches her square head and picks her square ears with a square boot.

The square animals and birds get ready for the harsh winter. Square worms drag square watermelons from square kolhoz fields into their square burrows in the square pine groves. Square flies dry out square barrels of kvas.

Above the square forest a square moon rises.

Ignat lies down in his square bed and falls asleep. In his square dream he sees that big soft round something. The something pets him on the cheek with its wing and starts to sing. Ignat opens his eyes. The snoring Nurka, his square wife, lies on top of him, snoring lightly, and scratches her square nose on his square forehead.

It’s time to get up. In the square barn the square pigs are already waiting for their hard square feed.
