OurStorm

Boris Pasternak, Our Storm

from "My Sister--Life," 1917

The storm, priest-like, has set lilacs ablaze,

And shrouded over eyes and clouds

With sacrificial haze. Now with your lips

Go straighten out the poor ant’s kinks.

The peal of pails knocked over to their sides,

What greed, oh! is there not enough sky?!

A hundred hearts beat in the trough.

The storm has set lilacs ablaze, priest-like.

The field—enameled. Its azure blue,

Threatening cold—has been scraped off.

Even the goldfinch’s in no rush

To shed its diamond drunkenness.

In tubs, the storm is still being consumed

From sweet capuches of abundance,

The clover, stormy, scarlet, splattered

With painters’ splotches of maroon.

Mosquitoes stick to mulberries.

But mark you that malarial proboscis,

Can it be pointing here, that monster,

This pinkest spot in summer’s sumptuousness?

To drop a little abscess through a blouse

And then alight a crimson ballerina?

To thrust the naughty needle in,

Where blood has gathered like wet leaves?!

Oh, do believe my play, and do believe

This migraine raging at your heels!

For so too must the wrath of day

Burn up in cherry bark, a weed.

So you believe? Now, oh yes now

Bring your face near, and, in revelation

Of this, your holy summertide,

I’ll blow it up into a scorching conflagration!

I will hide nothing from you:

You cloak your lips in jasmine snow,

I sense on mine that very snow,

It melts on mine in sleep.

Where do I put this happiness of mine?

In poems, on ruled notebook staves?

Their mouths are cracked and dry,

Parched by the poisons of the page.

They, warring with the alphabet,

Burn on your blushing cheeks, bright red.
