We Grow Out of Iron

Look!—I stand among them: tools, machines, hammers, furnaces and forges and among hundreds of comrades.

Above’s an iron-wrought expanse.

Beams and angle bars run along the sides.

They rise up to a hundred feet.

They bend to right and left.

They join with trusses in the cupolas and, like shoulders of giants, hold the entire edifice of iron.

They are ever-striving, they are all-sweeping, they are strong.

They demand yet greater strength.

I look at them and stand up straighter.

A newfound blood of iron flows into my veins.

And now I’ve grown some more.

Shoulders of steel and arms of immeasurable strength grow out of me. I’ve alloyed with the iron of the edifice.

I’ve risen.

I push out trusses with my shoulders, the upper beams, the roof.

My feet still touch the ground, my head has cleared the roof.

I’m still gasping for breath from these inhuman efforts, yet I’m already screaming out—“A word, comrades, I ask to have a word!”

The iron echo’s covered up my words, the entire edifice trembling with impatience.

And now I’ve raised myself higher yet, now to the level of the chimneys.

And not a story, nor a speech but just one thing, my iron word, will I scream out:

“We will triumph!”
